Whitney Houston simply known as the voice was the greatest female singer of all time. The sheer power of her vocals is second to none. Greatest female Singer of all time and second best artist ever

# 2 The Songbird

Mariah Carey in my book is one of the best singers ever. She has more number one hits than any other female performer in history. Her record breaking 18 number one singles is tied for second best along side Elvis and only trails the Beatles 20 number one singles. Her voice has continued to inspire a generation of female performers which include Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Brandy to name a few and her signature vocal style of whisling is as iconic as her laundry list of hit records.

Mrs.Carey has sold more than 265 million records worldwide making her one of the best selling artist's ever. Besides Madonna, no other musical act in history has past Mariah in album sales with the exception of Michael Jackson who sold around 392 million as solo artist, and the Beatles who have sold around 400 million as a vocal group. Though it is claimed that Elvis sold a billion records, no evidence has been proven to back up those claims. It is why I did not add his name here.

The reason I picked Mariah for the 2nd best female singer instead of first is because I believe Whitney edges her out in vocal power.

Great list, very thought-provoking. You seem to have the most successful singers here - and some big talent!

What about Sarah Vaughan, Ella, Lady Day, Phoebe Snow, Judy Garland, Dionne Warwick, Joni Mitchell, Barbra Streisand, Karen Carpenter?

Not as 'mega' as some of the female stars you've mentioned, but as far as talent is concerned, certainly as 'mega'!

ieu50,

Thanks for taking the time to read my hub. You are certainly right about the females you named. I am only 26 years old and I am not as familiar with those talents as well as I am with the very difficult list I made. I searched youtube to find some of the artists on my list since some of them are also before my time. These women are some of my personal favorites. I really have enjoyed their music but your choices are also great. I appreciate your feedback sir. Thanks again for stopping by.

Good thought to put together this list... There are some really notable omissions tho, and also I would have loved to know what criteria was used to put this list together because I'm a little confused at how some people made the list at all, but! your list, your rules. Keep rocking.

cynamans Hub Author 5 months ago

thanks for the feedback akawhitty,

My list was based upon vocal power and also uniqueness. As I stated before, the list was difficult to make since there are so many talented singers in the world of music. I don't know what singers you are referring to that you feel shouldn't have made my list but, it is my belief that these ladies are the best singers that music has produced over the past five decades. You are right I may have missed some other notable talents but as I said before, these are my favorite singers. Thanks again for stoping by.

beatrice dupree 5 months ago

Etta James at the age of 14-years of age formed an all girls do-wop-singing group. In 1955 the original record "Roll With me Henry was # 1 on the R&B hit record chart and remained there followed back to back by another hit. At a young age she had addictive medical problems but she rose above it all later in life. Etta James can hold her own next to any singer. Even the Opera Colatura soprano which I revere.

Dear Cynamans,

This is such a thought provoking list. It will be fun to see how many of my friends come close to picking different singers of your list as great.

Thank you,

I think your list is very well put together but as you stated before. This list was based on vocal power and uniquness right? It just makes me wonder why Patti Labelle would not be number one then. She has proven time and time again that no female vocalist can rival her on the mic, and pure power that has not wayned like it has on your top two. But i think your list is a good one and most of the people on it belong there.

Orneil Linton,

Dolly Parton is also a great choice but I wanted to include all of my all time favorites. I am not the biggest fan of country music however I do admire Ms. Parton. Maybe if I decide to do another list. I may include her on there.

Thanks, for reading my hub

i knew this was a joke when i saw Fantashia on here..lmao lets be real her...#5patti, #4 Aretha, #3 Beyonce, #2 Mariah, and #1 Whitney

Martin Taylor 2 months ago

When I saw the first three that you picked, I was thinking: "ok, I can see that" but after # 3, I was like: "uh, NO!" Based on "vocal ability" alone, some of these ladies don't deserve to be on the list especially Madonna. I like Madonna but she is not a "great vocalist". Her singing alone is average for a professional singer. I don't think that Donna Summer deserves to be on the list either. She is a "solid" singer but not that great. Tina Turner can sing, but she is more of an overrall energetic performer. Based on pure vocals, I would not have picked her. Whitney definitely deserves the top spot, and Mariah Carey is great too. Some other female singers that should have made the list if it is based on just "singing" are: Jennifer Hudson, Yolanda Adams, Ce Ce Winans, Deniece Williams(in her prime), Vesta and Regina Belle. I think it;s interesting that you made that list because I plan to make a mixed CD with my pick for the top 12 female singers and Whitney Houston's I will always love you will be the grand finale.

Whitney, Mariah and Christina, hands down the best vocalists in my opinion. I personally like Ms. Aguilera, she has unique quality to her voice. Leona Lewis is also one of the few female singer out there who can really sing nowaday. Adele is good but she does not top Whitney, Mariah and Christina.

I totally agree with the top 3 artists of this list. And we have to admit that this list can't please everyone as everybody got their favorite singers, but what matters is that many significant female singers were included in that list. Personnaly I disagree that singers like Madonna were included.I know she's huge as artist but,she was never considered as a great/skillful singer. She's more an entertainer than a singerChr.

My list of 15 international best female singers of all time would be :

1-Whitney Houston

2-Mariah Carey

3-Aretha Franklin

4-Barbra Streisand

5-Toni Braxton

6-Christina Aguilera

7-Leona Lewis

8-Vanessa Williams

9-Celine Dion

10-Beyonce Knowles

11-Lara Fabian

12-Chantal Pary

13-Judy Garland

14-Patti Labelle

15-Ella Fitzgerald

How could anyone have a list of 15 top female vocalist.. and include Madonna ? LOl... And Not include Linda Ronstadt !! I also question Fantasia and Christina Aguilera... and Joplin... the Queen of Rock and Roll is not Tina Turner. I sure would have Donna Summer much higher on this list...

Robbie 2 weeks ago

This list bugs me cause u mentioned song writing & Whitney did not do any writing. Madonna at least does & plays instruments. All the others on the list besides Dolly are such annoying R&B singers.

cynamans profile image

cynamans Hub Author 2 weeks ago

Robbie,

I think you viewed the wrong hub, if you're looking for the greatest song writers. My article is dedicated to the best singers of all time and buddy Dolly didn't even make it so, obviously you did not view my list correctly. Lastly, I do not just have R&b singers on my list. Joplin is a folk singer. Madonna, Christina,Celine and Barbra are all pop singers. Whitney and Mariah can be defined as both Pop and R&B so what are you talking about? If you find the singers on my list annoying, please check your hearing because you must be tone deaf!

Anyway thanks for stopping by.

Pascal 2 weeks ago

I think I understand what Cynamans means. If it was a list of greatest female songwriters of music,Dolly Parton,Carole King,Diane Warren would be surely included. If it was a lit of greatest female entertainers of music ndustry,Madonna would ad to be at the top, surely followed by Tina Turner,Janet Jackson,Cher,etc...as it is rather a lit of greatest female singers ( vocalists ),the most skilfull and vocally gifted female singers had to make that list.

Vishal Ithape 12 days ago

I mean yeah where is Karen Carpenter. This list is so wrong oh god I am annoyed.

Idel Leon 9 days ago

I love this list because all of them are really great singers in it's own gender. Donna Summer really touch my heart in her hey days, saw her two years ago and her voice is still amazing!

jtse in nyc 5 days ago

First of all, its Donna Summer, not Donna SummerS (no S in the end). if you vote based on vocal power, Donna Summer definately had the most powerful voocals ever. I actually love most of the artist in your list but whitney definately did not have nearly anywhere close to vocal power than Donna. I had seen both in concerts many times over the years and still love them both. Whitney have an incredibly beautiful voice, but moderate power. Donna actually had more vocal range and belted out without easily. Whitney was fully sweating (and drenched) when she belted out a tune. RIP both.

john miller 4 days ago

I cannot believe you would put such singers as fantasia ,celine, aretha, ahead of barbra unbelievable she is by far one of the greatest singers of all times right up there with whitney have you ever listened to her when she did one of the biggest duets in history with donna summers she kept on holding her notes and donna passed out please you have to be kidding me and all mariah can do is scream I mean she sounds good and then she has to take it a little further with that finger going up in the air and she sounds like a cat in a street fight Babs ha sone every award two and three times over she has the record for most awards 10 grammies,2 oscars 2 tony's and 5 emmies so I wouls like to see anyone top that I agree with a lot of your choices but putting amy whinehouse janis joplin and fantasia who really has gone nowhere PLEASE!!!!!

rissole 3 days ago

Let me see--no Dusty Springfield, Karen Carpenter, Pat Benatar, Ann Wilson, or Alannah Myles? Are you actually serious?

Another thing to remember is that there's a big difference between having a great voice and being a good singer--the latter involves warmth, personality, musicality, charisma, etc. A lot of singers with great voices are not particularly good singers (like Mariah Carey), and some singers with mediocre voices (like Kylie Minogue) are actually pretty decent singers.

Anyway, I agree with some of your list, but disagree with a lot of it as well. Whitney Houston was not even close to being the best singer ever IMO, although her voice itself (which she used like a foghorn) was outstanding.

rissole 3 days ago

Oh, I just thought of another singer who was left out: Olivia Newton-John. She was definitely one of the best--very warm and musical. Sheena Easton too. Taylor Dayne is a great singer as well.

Paul 2 days ago

If you admit you are only 26 years old and not familiar with the other talents mentioned, then how can you justify the title of the article as being the best of all time? Fantasia?? Please.

john miller 2 days ago

we can all agree to disagree, but by far Babs is the greatest star of all time, and you who put down Madonna have you ever listened to any of her ballads she not only writes her on music but she is constantly changing her voice is so rich in tone in Evita so she really deserves to be on the list. I agree Whitney had a beautiful voice such a shame she wasted it, but when she was good she was great, but Babs is always great and she didn't even think of herself as a singer no effort and she always sings live and in key!!!!

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I have read your thoughts and I must say that my list was based upon my personal favorites as well as vocal power. If this list was a top 50 one, I would have definitely icluded many of you all choices but unfortunately only 15 great singers and artists could make this particular list. I must note I am a huge fan of Cher, Toni Braxton and many others that you guys have suggested. I did not mean to snub anyone. Again this list was first based upon my personal favorites and singers who voices I believe are among the best that music has to offer.

Thanks again for your feedback. I have enjoyed hearing from all of you.

Hey John,

Thanks for your feedback. Barbra is certainly a great singer. we can agree about that. I must admit even though she is not one of my favorites,I still respect her talent. I'm still in my 20s so Barbra's music sounds a little bit too old for me. However, Madonna is an artist I grew up listening to as a young child and yes I love her voice in Envita, she is amazing and definitely deserves to be on my list. Thanks again for stopping bye

I am sorry but I have to respond to the ridiculous comment left by john millier, about Donna passing out when recording enough is enough with Barbara... she passed out from exhastion from her crazy busy shedule, not from your delusions that she couldn't hold a note with Barbara, in fact she holds the record for the longest single note (held) on a recording ... Dim All the Lights..1979.
